I am new to the San Francisco area. Has anyone tried any of these east Oakland hills areas? It is not going to be like the Sierra Nevadas - but there should be something worth panning for off the hills here - no?  Any ideas? Does anyone know if panning is allowed on east bay regional park land? I was planning to take my nieces somewhere local to learn to pan. Thanks for any ideas, comments or suggestions.

I tried Gazos Creek right before I moved from the area. Ran about 4 buckets through a sluice and found some black sand and small flour gold. It is located in Burtano state park off of Gazos Creek road which you can access from Highway 1 about 5 miles south of Pescadero State beach.  Not posted, and again on state land so I had no issue with the ranger that stopped to say hi.
