Del Puerto Canyon was first formed when a volcanic eruption layered a layer of lava over this area of the mountains. Then most of the lava hardened into the igneous foundation of the current hills, but, a small area (where the canyon is now) didn't solidify. Eventually flowing down into the central valley leavng a small canyon behind it. Over time, creeks formed from rainfall cut the canyon even deeper. The minerals that compose this area are mainly limestone, sandstone, granite, quartz, and small amounts of gold. The area is also rich with fossil deposites from when this area was the seafloor and later times.
